NEUROTHEOLOGY: Studying the relationship between human brain-activity and spiritual experience/belief.

--- --- ---

If the scientists prove that spiritual states (feelings of supernatural grace/revelation/etc.) are indeed caused by some electrobrainwaves crackling, how does this affect faith?

Well... I don't think it does. Because one could still say that God uses our electrobrainwaves to communicate with us. So the spiritual state comes from the electrobrainwaves, but it would still be God's act.

In the same way that one could say that evolution is just God's way of creating the different species. (And I think that's actually much more creative than simply poofing them into existence... :p)

So I'm still of the belief that the supernatural is exactly just that: beyond the natural. And therefore beyond scientific scrutiny and proof.

Of course, this is all still very interesting. I'm just thinking out loud about the limits of science (as conventionally defined).

--- --- ---

P.S. Just in case you're wondering. I guess I'd fall under the category "agnostic". But I really prefer the terms "cultural creative" or "liberal artist kitty hippie". :3

St. Augustine is an interesting chap, and he goes something like:

Faith is to believe what you do not see; the reward of this faith is to see what you believe.

you are an agnostic-theist in a way then, because you still have BELIEF "that the supernatural is exactly just that: beyond the natural." and then concluded, "And therefore beyond scientific scrutiny and proof." i think most of us are that way, doubting thomases.

neurotheology sounds like pseudoscience and mysticism's bastard child.

if the same electromagnetic effects are detected in people high on hallucinogenics, does this mean that faith is an addiction?
