@feanne -- Your online behaviour is well within the usage that any off-the-shelf wifi router is built to handle, so you don't really need anything hardcore.
If you don't care about all this wireless spec mumbo-jumbo and just want something simple and reliable, think about getting an Apple Airport Express. Smaller than a pocketbook, has no power cable, and takes about 15 seconds to setup (including the time it takes to remove it from the packaging). Works with all machines I've ever tried it with -- Mac, Windows, Linux.
The only issue I've seen with it is that it's meant for smaller houses because of its size and reach. If you're at a hotel, for example, you could bring it with you and create a wifi hotspot on the fly. If you've got a bigger house though (as I imagine you might), you would probably want to go with the full-size Apple Airport. It's slightly larger and has a bit more cable, but has a much more powerful signal.
