One month. I’ll just give you one month before the preseason starts. Sure there will be predictions on who will be the league’s MVP but here’s a clear breakdown on what we could spot.
Game Starts Now!
THE POINT GUARDS
Honestly there are four guards that should battle for the Mythical Team spot but amongst these quarterbacks, none of them will win the MVP award.
A crack to the first team could do wonders though.
JIMMY ALAPAG: Here’s a guy that started slow in both conferences. While he picked up his game in the final two games of Talk N Text, the Phone Pals failed to break out of the Wildcard Phase, which means a Mythical Team citation could be in jeopardy. However, his numbers could at least make him a candidate to grace the Second Team but to a very slim extent.
PHILCUP STATS: 12.9ppg, 3.4rpg, 6.1apg (19 games)
FIESCUP STATS: 14.1ppg, 3.9rpg, 5.7apg, 1.1spg (20 games)
WYNNE ARBOLEDA: A strong Fiesta Cup finish could land this guy in the First Team or even in the Second Team. This is if he sustains his game. The Snatcher is barely a consistent player in terms of scoring but he does get his stats in the other facets of stat points. While his stats are nothing spectacular, a monster finish by Air21 could prove to be an incentive. The Fiesta Cup status they got was an improvement from their Philippine Cup rank which ended after the Wildcard Phase.
PHILCUP STATS: 11.1ppg, 4.4rpg, 5.4apg, 1.6spg (18 games)
FIESCUP STATS: 10.6ppg, 4.1rpg, 4.3apg, 1.6spg (20 games as of July 15)
RYAN REYES: The leading rookie of the year contender could be the wildcard of the Guard First Team selection. Picked up third overall in the 2007 Draft, Reyes provided the offense for the Realtors. More importantly, his defense stands out as one of the best in this season. He leads the league in steals and he is touted as one of the best rebounding guards despite barely completing his maiden season. After Sta. Lucia’s championship run and in their current quarterfinal seeding, he has hands down won for me the Top Rookie plum. Making the Mythical Team is a different story.
PHILCUP STATS: 9.4ppg, 5.6rpg, 3.2apg, 1.7spg (31 games)
FIESCUP STATS: 9.8ppg, 4.9rpg, 3.9apg, 2.7spg (21 games as of July 15)
JAYJAY HELTERBRAND: He has been the only King to play in all of their games dating back to the start of the Philippine Cup. He is hands down the best point guard this season but will Ginebra’s Wildcard finish derail his bid? The Kings need to stop Sta. Lucia and try to kick Red Bull out in order for Helter-skelter claim a Mythical First Team. He is sure to claim at least one of the two point guard spots in the selection but he’ll be a clear choice if his team makes it to the Finals.
PHILCUP STATS: 18.5ppg, 5.4rpg, 6.8apg (19 games)
FIESCUP STATS: 18.6ppg, 4.2rpg, 5.9apg, 1.0spg (19 games as of July 15)
The off-guard and small forward positions are a bit shady. So I’m billing them as the Slashers Part 1 and Slashers Part 2 placings.
Until then, now you can SURF PORN!
