I bet you guys are curious on who's going to be the next batch of rookies to play in the PBA next year. Gabe Norwood is a unanimous answer on who's going to be the top rookie next.. but what about the others? Join me as we take a first look at the next batch of PBA superstars. First up, the top picks

Gabe Norwood

Projected landing: Top 3, possibly number 1

Analysis: At 6'5, he handles the ball fairly well. Can play the number 1 spot all the way to the three spot. Provides match up problems especially if he plays the two guard position. Also a capable defender, especially in traps, can use those long arms deflecting the ball away in a full court press or in a half court zone press. Has US Collegiate Basketball experience. Will blossom with teams like Welcoat, Air 21, Talk and Text and Coca Cola.

Solomon Mercado

Projected landing: Top 5

Analysis: Bulky point guard with a high basketball IQ. Has shades of Sta.Lucia rookie stand out Ryan Reyes, a very good one on one defender because of that wide body frame. Will blossom with teams like Alaska, Welcoat and Red Bull

Rob Reyes

Projected landing: Top 3

Analysis: The best bigman in the draft class today. A very athletic 6'5 with a PBA ready body. Reminds me of a Mark Pingris with better offensive skillset. Will most likely blossom with a team that needs a reliable bigman and if you're talking about teams that needs reliable bigmen.. you're talking about Ginebra.

Jared Dilinger

Projected landing: Top 3, could be a good steal at 2.

Analysis: Another big kid who can play both wing position. Can create match up problems specially if he plays the two guard spot. Has range that extends all the way to the three point area and can play the point occasionally, and make plays for his teammates. He is most suitable to play with a team like Purefoods who is in need of a good small forward.

Mark Borboran

Projected landing: Mid pick in the first round

Analysis: A very versatile player who can play both forward position. Has range which can extend all the way to the three point line and can create shots for himself. Suitable to play with Ginebra and Welcoat.

and everybody's talking about Jason Castro too. how about him? he's set to leave for the Aussie league but he's still joining the draft. the team who picks him earns the right to field him if ever he decides to quit the aussie league after the first season.

    my other pick:

Kelvin de la Pena - 2007 NCAA MVP. He's a good guard. Shooting well beyond the arc with the sweetest form, makes him a deadly hitman on the hardcourt. However, his consistency is still in question. And it seems that his mouth is bigger than his game.

Chris Tiu - Well, he's just the best eagle out there in the draft and probably one of the finest from today's UAAP.

Beau Belga - he's a good bigman. Not overrated not underrated.

Kelvin Gregorio - he has proven his game in the PBL and UAAP alongside Mark Borboran. Why not him?

The other picks above are my picks too.

^ Jason Castro is playing in the Aussie league. Will not be eligible for this year's draft.

de la Pena is good but how do you think will he fare against the big boys in the pro level if he can't even get a consistent game going in the PBL and the NC?

Chris Tiu isn't eligible for the draft this year, UAAP rules isn't the same with the NCAA where in you can play in this year and apply for the draft the same year. I doubt he'll be a bigtime contributor too. See JC Intal for example.

Beau Belga - Still pretty skeptical on his back to the basket move. Can be a solid backup ala Ervin Sotto or Migs Noble but that's it.

Kelvin Gregorio - Read my next article, bukas ko na gagawin. HAhaha

Of course my schoolmate loves his own... Sting, I'm still waiting for the next cardinal to really blossom in the PBA. Anyway, who's the last one? Benny Cheng? Dela Rosa is a disappointment!

^ Alvin Patrimonio is prolly the last cardinal who really made waves in the PBA.

Interesting note though, during his stint in Mapua, Alvin never won an NCAA Championship while Benny Cheng, who spent his PBA career as a backup bigman at best steered the MIT to back to back NC Championships in 90-91.

^^ Benny Cheng is also a disappointment. bench ng ginebra lang yun. I dont know. But after that ala Lakers vs Boston first game slaughter from the hands of the San Beda red Lions. Guess what? theyre on a four game winning streak. I just hope that theyll keep their game intact. :)
