Translated from a mostly vernacular conversation.
Some old friends working in Manila went home to take advantage of the three day weekend last week. We staged a get together at usual hangout. After the usual hello's, kamusta's and whatnot we settled down and ordered a round.
Waiter lists down as we shoot off our choices one by one.
Skinny: San Mig Light
Chubby: Red Horse
Rocker: Red Horse
Cowgirl: Strong Ice
Me: May Pilsen kayo?
All four of them stare at me with bewilderment.
Cowgirl: Waah! Tatay!
Me: Why? I like the taste. It's what I put in my ref at home and it's the same taste as the one Skinny ordered.
Rocker: Still, that's what our dads drink.
Chubby: And FPJ's already dead.
Skinny: And most people that drink that hold the same shape as the bottle. Pretty huge bellies.
Me: I don't see Chubby ordering it.
I knew they were only teasing me. Being the most stoic one in the group, they've always been trying to find ways to get a rise out of me. It's the game we always play. We moved on to different topics, trying to catch up with each other's lives. But in the back of my mind, I can't help but wonder what's the big deal with a guy my age liking the classic San Miguel Pale Pilsen.
I grew up with that beer. From stealing sips as a kid, to the overnight sessions with my cousins and uncles, our drink of choice has always been that amber colored liquid contained in a brown glass bottle. Still...
Our drinks arrived, and all five bottles stood in the middle of the table. From the slender, sexy Ice and Light, the macho Horse, the shape of the pudgy pilsen bottle paled in comparison. Like a pariah that mysteriously teleported into the middle of a soiree.
There's something really wrong with the shape of the bottle. It was clumsy looking, just not right at all.
So I asked the waiter for a beer mug.

A friend used to tell me that each town here, may nakasanayan nang brand ng beer. Some towns are used to Pale Pilsen, some to Red Horse, some to Heineken, some to Stag, some to Colt, and some to Carlsberg. Different strokes for different folks I guess. And I was joking about the Heineken part. :p

@spidamang Wahahaha Tatay! I never really liked the taste of pilsen..more of a redhorse for me. But my favorite was the one my tita got from germany. The flavor was more compact and undiluted. It tasted like chocolate.

Looks like they changed the bottle shape. I don't know if this is just for Oktoberfest though.

Uberstein (Hofbrauhaus beer) after watching the Cubs game. For 6 bucks a MUG, fresh from the tap, it's soooooo fucking worth it. I'm pretty much sure they'll have something for October. Hell, everyday is Oktoberfest!
The mugs look so much bigger in person.
If at home or a friends place, Sam Adams or Blue Moon.
Pag walang - wala, Bud, Miller or Coors.
If only San Mig Light wasn't so fucking expensive. 25 bucks a fucking bottle.
