One of the factors that made version zero, really dull and dumb. Is that people prioritized "pasikatan" over content. Like i've said before in zero, it became a popularity contest. and personalan.

There are a number of reasons why we should bury threads, images, and other content. Here's my own list.

1. because we are offended. need i say more?

2. because it only covers a certain group of people. it's like telling an inside joke that's between you and your wife in a public fora. in a community, people should feel like they are part of it. but by making groups and leaving others out, you make highfiber very unappealing to new members, or even guests. there's an air of "exclusiveness" to this place. a wall that new members cant seem to pierce. the rise of the members in version 4 and 5 is because the staffers were respectful and friendly.

speaking of which, the community doesnt even welcome new members anymore. everybody seems to have grown cynical, and would automatically think of these new blood as smurfs.

3. because we should set those poked contributions as examples to future thread starters.

4. because this is not your blog. if we dont get you, you should be poked. we seldom care about the most minute details of your life. and if you want to tell us something about yourself, make it so that there's something there for the community to think/discuss/debate/be_entertained_about. be f*cking considerate. because you might sound like you're bragging or deluded if you constantly reveal too much about what you do and other personal details. seriously, this what made zero really dull, people who turned it into their own personal stage and circus. they made the rest of the community outside their own little circle of friends, into their audience. of course, i've know some members who make their own "friends" out of themselves (alter-egos kuno) and pretend that another member likes them and stuff. and i poked/buried them in the past.

one of the earlier appeals of highfiber, is that nobody knows each other. well, some do. but they sparingly talk to each other about their personal lives, and focused mostly on the content. And then, when members started inviting their friends, it became more and more of a problem, especially when threads become hijacked, and one liner no brainer comments began to populate the threads more and more, which most of the time, really veer discussions away from the real topic.

And so, I think that Luis really got it right this time, by limiting how much a member can comment, in the form of points. The only problem now is, how much self control can the members muster to prevent themselves from patting their friends instead of poking them for their dumb threads. for the sake of the community.

I hope Luis can lessen the amount of points for each contribution, and also severely limit the number of pats/pokes for each member (how about deducting it to the points too?). This way people can become more conscious of how they'd respond to an article, and pat/poke people. Sure, these takes away a little freedom. But then again, constraints generate creativity.

And also, we should have some staffers, to at least moderate or correct the grammar or spelling of some members. of course, we should select those like Mr.Clean, who's quite skilled in writing, mr.terror-that-flaps-in-the-night, our grammar police, (haha), mike, if he's still here. and other members as well, who somehow knows luis personally, or if not, should have good vocabulary, grammar sense and writing acumen. In short, people who could be role models for the rest of the community to follow.

The least we can do is to show respect for our members, by reading their posts, digesting their ideas, and expressing what we think.

Luis revived highfiber. It's now time to show your gratitude, kids. Get the best stuff from the web, write excellent articles, and be friendly to the new guys. And try to be consistent in your use of language. And also speak english, if the thread started is in english, just as a sign of respect to the thread starter.

Good post. This one could be a great jumpstart. I agree with most of your points especially the staffers or moderators to help Luis on maintaining this site but not so much with the last few lines of point number 2.

Again, an example of this would be my argument with a member here (Probably the most overused example in this version) in a thread that you'd still probably see in the frontpage right now. My first comment was actually a reminder and not something to negate his thread, I even wrote it in Tagalog for it to be clear but as soon as we knew it, everything got ugly after he retorted with some ugly comments.. calling names and all that shit.. that's how it ended there. Now my point is, while I agree with you that we should be more uhmm what should I call it.. loose or more cautious on how to respond to a new member (He's not actually new, he's the same guy from Zero) but if you come into a real life community, and you ask people to "change" and one guy from the community tells you properly that this community is not going to change for you, you're going to have to fit in with the way we're doing it here and you respond by calling the community a rabid piece of junkshit, you're going to get your ass kicked and that's exactly what happened in there. However, there's a real thin line of course (Like what you're saying) on when to respond in an atrocious manner to a member and when to welcome someone with open arms in a group. But don't get me wrong I hope to see the latter here more often and yeah, I promise to avoid being a dick to other members. Hehe

Anyway, you presented a great point as a whole.. we now have this site back and let's do our best not to shitterize this site again. And as a form of gratitude, as what you're saying in your thread, I got the Sports section covered. :D

    My personal thoughts on this:

The way this site has evolved over the years has been really organic. The "social standard" for what is deemed acceptable behaviour has come about mostly because of how people use pats & pokes, but you have to remember that this system is inherently flawed. What I mean is this: we have no way to stop smurf-gangs and we have little in the form of safeguards against really determined script kiddies. So at the very heart of the matter is the fact that the pats & pokes system is a fun game for people who wish to play by its rules.

With that in mind, I would say that any newbie who is willing to get their first content submission out there, get poked to oblivion, and yet come back and try again is worth keeping around, because they choose to play by the basic rules of the site. They'll "get it" eventually, too -- some people may be slower than others, but after enough attempts even a complete dolt will come to understand what content is worth posting. Either that, or he'll get completely squelched and you'll never hear from him again.

The other thing you have to remember is that what is "not worth posting" is incredibly subjective, which is why it takes quite a few pokes before content is completely removed from the listing pages (an item needs to have -100 points before it is hidden completely). Being part of a community means that you will generally have to contend with several hundred slightly differing opinions, so mob rules can be especially volatile.

Lastly: I'm personally opposed to having staffers edit other people's posts. It's too much of a slippery slope, and I'd much rather keep things simple and liability-free.

I've actually been playing around with the idea of allowing self-editing on content you contributed, but it'll cost you a certain number of points (depending on how long ago you originally submitted it). This is to discourage multiple-edits on content that people have already seen; essentially, once you've said something it should be pretty much locked in.

Overall, I've really enjoyed watching how everyone has started to settle in to highfiber again over the past two weeks. There's still lots of work to be done but it looks like we're on the right track.

As flattering as it is to think that someone thinks I write well and am a grammar and spelling nazi, It's way too much effort to try to fix every single post that I feel has wrong grammar, punctuation, spelling etc.

Frankly I'd rather make fun of you than fix your mistakes.

Also, I and I'm sure every one of the senior (and by senior I mean we've been with hifi since version 2 at least, not that we're old, thanks much) would agree that we like how highfiber is running just fine. People who can't handle it shouldn't be here in the first place, and the pat/poke system (and the users of course) does a helluva good job at being the gatekeepers to the madhouse that is highfiber.

It is quite curious how version 0 just never enticed me that much, and how much more vested I am in this current version of hifi.

i dunno. i think one of the reasons why people frequent this site is because of the freedom that it gives to its members. although it does have a negative effect because some of those members tend to take advantage of that freedom, like what the others said, their will always be assholes anywhere you go.

Gee, you must live in a world where people throw parties for newcomers like you to work or an apartment complex. This site isn't that kinda place.
