It was probably a decade ago when we first heard of Claire Danes malign Manila as a "ghastly and weird" place, that "smelled of cockroaches, with rats all over, no sewerage system and the people do not have anything — no arms, no legs, no eyes." This isn't surprising as she exhibited the attitude of a typical elitist bitch from New York. If she were an extraterretrial who landed in the middle of the Dead Sea she would probably conclude that life didn't exist on Earth. All mouth and no brain makes Claire a bigoted airhead.

A few years back, we heard Teri Hatcher in "Desperate Housewives" checking her doctor’s credentials just to make sure that he did not earn his medical degree from "just some medical school in the Philippines" This is the scriptwriter's fault now. The S.O.B. underestimates our doctors.

A few days ago, the British Comedy Show from BBC, “Harry and Paul” featured a Filipina domestic helper being instructed by Harry to gyrate in front of Paul. See CLIP here.

They mock the beauty of our country, insult our intelligence ,and reduce our women OFWs to sexual objects. Those elitist bastards and bitches ( who are pathetically chained to a single language ) are stupid enough to commit the same mistake over and over again. We Filipinos are a sensitive and proud race. Mess with one of us, and you mess with all of us.

it's a bit of a touchy subject, but some people are prone to exaggeration. i'm not one to belittle our race but c'mon, we're not innocent when it comes to these matters. ho many racial slurs have we heard everyday about indians (bumbay) and african-americans (egoy, negro)? ang malala pa nun, parang normal lang sa atin magsalita ng ganun. everybody should just chill.

    ^double standards.

Yung diperensya kasi, para sa atin, ok lang laitin ang ibang lahi kung tayo tayo lang. Ayaw nating maglait na bulgar na bulgar. I.E. tv broadcast, public speech, etc. even in the spirit of fun.

Sure most of us grabe mag lait ng egoy, instsik, koreano, hapon, bumbay, muslim, bakla, lesbiana, taba, kano, sosyal at kung ano ano pa, but mostly all in the spirit of good fun but only when we are in the company of fellow pinoys. just like what most western tv shows, stand up comics etc try to do. The only difference is, they got the balls (or the gall) to do it publicly :)

Kung tutuusin, sobra pa nga tayong manglait kung minsan eh. Yun nga lang tayo tayo lang makarinig.

Well that's true. Okay kung tayo-tayo lang. I admit I do have personal prejudices about some races too but airing them in public...tsk,tsk. and by BBC too. hahaha

It's like the joke where African-Americans call each other niggahs but beat a fair-skinned jock out of his whits if he even mouths the word.

I agree with spidaman and Larry but especially with seth about the porn thing. lol!

Kidding aside, here in the US, we tend to talk about other races in out own dialect. We'll call them names that. most of the time, they don't have a fucking clue to what it means. Like what they said, we are more mean then we seem to be. As a matter of fact, we do it to our own kind.

Just this sunday, I was doing laundry when another filipino come in and took my cart. I called him out and said that's mine and I'm still using it. Thinking that I grew up here, the guys starts to curse in tagalog and starts calling me "unggoy, "gago" and a bunch more of tagalog insults while smiling at me. The shock on his face when I started to answer him back in tagalog with my Quezon accent. I told me to be careful of what he says because some might understand what he's saying. The poor guy left the shop with doing his laundry. It was so fucking priceless.

Another story, this happen to a friend of mine whose mom is Pinay and the dad is African-American. He got more of his skin color from his dad, so he's more darker than our skin color plus he has curly hair. He got on the bus one day and saw that there were two Filipinas on the bus. He smiled at them but instead of smiling back, the the two talks to each other and says, " Ano ang niing-ingti ng unggoy an ito?" then laughs their heads off. My friend got offended and before getting off, he spoke to them in tagalog and the two was left in awe.

The sad part here is that as long as our slums exist, as long as our board exams can be leaked, as long as there are OFWs providing "extra" services and such; these slurs are going to continue. What they did was wrong and insensitive; and you can demand respect and apologies to restore pride; but it would take much more than that to restore reputations.

Another problem with racial misconceptions, is the fact that a few bad apples in a race end up defining the race.

    On a side note,

BAKIT WALA PA AKONG NARINIG NA FILIPINO MAFIA/MOB?

or is it just the fact that the said mob is so bad ass, nobody wants to talk about them?

Oh great another one of these. People should just relax.

To add to the others' comments, when I was in the US, I would note that Filipinos are among the most racist people I've seen there especially when it comes to Blacks, Hispanics and even the Vietnamese.

@spida - mas maraming gangs with matching pipe guns and paltiks from Danao. Pero yung organized mob siguro medyo mahirap hanapin. Baka masyadong secretive. hehe

@sorenkant - Definitely. It's like having gay friends it's ok that they're gay as long as they don't hit on you. LOL

@michael - yeah. it would die down in a few days anyway. just got carried away when my friend called. It's harder to swallow if someone you know experiences it.

I was so pissed off with a former Cantonese co-worker. she's not as civilised as others even if she stayed in New Zealand for a while. she still pees squatting on top of the toilet, yet she sees Filipinos as servants since a lot of OFW DHs go to Hongkong. she even ordered and bossed me around.

there are plenty of those overseas but most implode due to infighting as there are more chiefs than indians, the same goes with so called Filipino community organizations they never last long.

seems to me this experience is universal, i often get mistaken as a vietnamese due to my shoulder length hair and facial hair and the amount of name calling and insults i have heard behind my back are too many to count hence my hesitation to mix with other Filipino's groups.

for all my occasional musing of Pinoy mentality, i'm somehow cloudy on why that sort of behaviour propagated in our culture.

yeah, i do agree that most of the time it's more for fun than for cruel discrimination, heck sometimes it's a term of endearment.

right now, all i can think of is that it's traced way back in the Spanish colonial period, when the upper strata of society views the lower ones with contempt and derision. i've read something about how even the Visayans were treated as such by Luzon dwellers because they dress funny back then.

Or, would your reaction have been different if the maid were given intellegent nosebleeding-English lines (not unlike the stereotype originated by Bubble Gang)?

This might be a case people willing to start WWIII because of bad scriptwriting.
